A total of 32 species of mammals has been recorded.

Birds in Yala

Yala is a paradise, full of birds. Yala is world famous for its easy spotting leopard. Still it has so much more to see. There are 120-130 species of birds mainly.

Raptors including crested serpent eagle, white bellied sea eagle are seen. Many water birds are attracted to the lagoons. Lesser flamingo, Pelican, Spoonbill, Ppainted stork, Black necked stork, Grey heron, Purple heron, Night heron, Egret, Purple coot, Darter are seen. 

During the north-east monsoon the lagoons are visited by thousands of migrating waterfowl, pintail, garganey, white winged blach tern,  eurasian curlew, whimbrel, turn stone, whistling duck, yellow wattled lapwing, red wattled lapwing and great stone plover. 

The forest contain orange breasted green pigeon, hornbills, flycatchers, barbets, orioles and many peafowls

Vegetation of the park



Yala is a secondary forest. People believe it is only few hundred years old. It is a semi-arid thorn scrub, in between there are pockets of dense forest. Species you will mainly find are

Climate and physical features


The park lies in a transition zone between the single wet season experienced on the east coast and the double peak of precipitation found along the south coast of the island. Mean annual rainfall varies between approximately 900mm in the south to 1300mm in the north, with an extensive period of drought from May to September. Hence it is the best period to visit the park. Mean annual temperature is 27'C.

The park comprises coastal plain with a number of scattered inselbergs, associated with which are a number of caves and pools. There are also several fresh water lakes and brackish lagoons. Most of the park underlain by the vijayan series, a variety of lower palaeozoic gnessic rocks formed about 600 million years ago.

Location and Access




Yala National Park is situated in the south eastern region of Sri Lanka. It extends in two provinces and two administrative districts. Northern, north western and western areas of the park lie in Monaragala district in Uva province. Southern and south western areas are in Hambantota district in Southern province. Part of the south, whole eastern boundary lie along the Indian ocean.

There are three main access to Yala National Park
  • Along the coastal line via Galle, Matara, Hambantota and Tissamaharama. This is the commonly used route due to the newly built two express ways. It takes 5-6 hours. 
  • Via Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, Embilipitiya, Hambantota and Tissamaharama.
  • Via Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, Udawalawa, Tanamalvila and Tissamaharama.

Introduction to Yala National Park



Ruhuna national park consist of 5 blocks. Block 1 of Ruhuna National Park was established on 25th February 1938. It was a resident sportsmen shooting reserve in 1900. Block 2 was established in 3rd September 1954. Block 3 on 28th April 1967. Block 4 on 9th October 1969. Block 5 on 5th October 1973.

Yala is renowned for itd wildlife variety. Some says it hosts the thickest number of leopards in the world. It is a dry zone tropical thorn forest. Moreover it has a fine coastline associated with coral reefs. 

Large number of important cultural ruins are found in the area. There so many abandoned water systems in yala that suggest us of ancient civilisation which was in this area with number of paddy fields. 

Anyway now it is the homeland for amazingly thick flora and fauna. Never ever forget to visit Yala National Park in your visit to Sri lanka.
